Torpedo Defence
Maritime Systems' Modular Towed Array Sonar System was employed to meet the requirements of the passive sensor for the Royal Navy's 2170 Surface Ship Torpedo Defence (SSTD). This system, which is capable of high frequency intercept and mid frequency tracking for torpedoes, has a passive submarine detection capability. RN2170 is designed to be easily cross deckable from one ship to another and does not need to tie into the ships command and control system. Upon detection of an incoming torpedo by the passive intercept array, the target is classified and localised. Counter measures are deployed from the warship to either jam or decoy the incoming torpedo. Furthermore, the RN2170 system offers the ship's Captain tactical manoeuvring advice. The RN2170 is innovative in that it incorporates the SLQ-25A 'Nixie' towed countermeasure into a flexible towed body which eliminates the requirement for a separate handling system.
